Effects of Auricular Acupressure on Insomnia and Anxiety Symptoms in ICU Patients

AbstractObjective：Toevaluatetheefects of auricularacupresureoninsomniaandanxietysymptoms inpatients inthe intensivecareunit（ICU）during nursingcare.Methods：Atotalof 6OICUpatients admitedtotheFirstAfliatedHospitalof Xiamen University from May 2O24to May2O25 were enrolled andrandomly dividedintoacontrol groupandanobservation groupusing a random number table，with3O patients ineach group.Thecontrolgroupreceived routine nursingcare，whiletheobservationgroup receivedauricularacupressre inadditiontoroutinecare.Both groupswere interveneduntilICUdischarge.Traditional Chinese Medicine（TCM）symptomcoresincudingrestlessnesswithinsomnia，diffcultyfallingasp，palpitations withdreams，ndinability to sleepafterawakening—werequantified.Sleepparameters，including numberof awakenings，durationof awakenings，sleep eficiency，andsplatencyerecomparedbeforeandafterintervention.Insomaseveritywasaessedusing theAtesIsomniaScale（AIS），and anxiety was evaluatedusingthe HamiltonAnxietyScale（HAMA）.Results：After intervention，TCMsmptom scoresforrestlessness withinsomna，dficultyfalingasleep，palpitationswithdreams，andinabilitytolepafterawakeningdecreased in both groups，with significantly lower scores in the observation group than in the control group（ P<0.05 ）. The observationgrouphadfewerawakenings，shorterawakeningdurations，shortersleeplatency，andhighersleepeficiencythantheontrol group（ P<0.05 ）.AIS and HAMA scores decreased in both groups after intervention，with the observation group significantly lower than the control group（ P<0.05 ）. Conclusion： Auricular acupressure can effectively improve insomnia and anxiety symptoms in ICU patients and enhance sleep quality ，supporting its clinical application.
