A Study on the Characteristics of Stance Markers in English MA Theses//CHANG Ruochen, GUO Shuyi

Abstract: Based on self-built corpora, this paper compares and analyzes the characteristics and differences in the use of stance markers in English master theses and international journal papers. The results show that the standard frequency of stance markers in master theses is significantly lower than that of international journal papers. Meanwhile, boosters, attitudinal adverbs and self-mentions are significantly less used in master theses than in international journal papers. It is argued that English learners pursuing a Master's degree rely on limited sets of linguistic choices, and exhibit an obvious preference for invisible authorial presence in academic writing.
