“山慈菇”“慈姑”名实辨析

The Identification and Aanalysis of the Names and Reality of “Shan Ci Gu（山慈菇）” and “Ci Gu（慈姑）”//WEI Huimin， HONG Mei， GAO Xinyan

Abstract： Inconsistencies in the naming of “Shan Ci Gu（山慈菇）” and “Ci Gu（慈姑）”， arising mainly from the interchangeable use of the characters “菇” and “姑”， are evident in both ancient and modern herbal works， as well as in current textbooks and reference books. These inconsistencies lead to misunderstandings regarding their botanic origins and poses challenges for accurate terminology in publications. A historical linkage between the names of the two herbs has resulted in their phonetic and orthographic resemblance， making them easily confounded. It is imperative to employ the methodologies of philology， historiography， terminology， linguistics and phytology to analyze the evolution and interrelationship of the ancient and modern names as well as the botanic sources of Shan Ci Gu and Ci Gu. Reasonable suggestions for the standard names of the two herbal medica should be put forward from the perspective of the standardization of TCM terms and academic publishing norms. Based on the evolution of the two medicinal names in historical herbal medica works and the consensus in modern literature， in the TCM field， we recommended that “山慈菇” and “慈姑” as the standard names for these two medicines respectively in academic publications， so as to promote the precision and standardization of academic expression and reduce cognitive biases arising from terminological confusion.
