Influence of Sodium Content on Physical-Chemical Properties and Reaction Performance of Bulk Hydrogenation Catalysts

Abstract: An increase in sodium content (herein referred to as the massfraction of sodium in the catalyst or its process products)willcausechanges inthe physical-chemical properties ofthe bulkcatalyst,which notonlyaffcts thedifficulty ofcatalystformation,butalsoaffectsthehydrogenationactivityofthecatalyst.Materials withdiferentsodiumcontents were usedto preparebulkcatalysts,andbulk catalysts with diferentsodium contents were prepared,andtheinfluence ofsodium on thecatalyst physicochemical properties andcatalytic activity wassystematicaly investigated.Theresults showed that high sodium content in the extruded material would result in the iabilityto prepare and shape the bulk catalyst. When the sodium mass fraction in the extruded material was below 10% , successful shaping was achievable. When the sodium mass fraction decreased to 1.5% ,thecatalyst strength increased from 98N⋅cm-1 to 167N⋅cm-1 while the attrition rate(mass fraction) decreased from 2.21% to 1.21% .When the sodium mass fraction in the bulk catalyst decreased from 7.27% to 0.08% , the pore volume increased by 1.45 times and the specific surface area increased by 1.56 times. When sodium mass fraction was 0.40% , sodium did not cause aggregation of the active metals, but the sodium deposited in the catalyst pores led to a decline in HDS and HDN activities, with the refined oil containing 14.4μg⋅g-1 sulfur and 3.1μg⋅g-1 nitrogen. Sodium mass fraction of 6.51% caused aggregation of the active metals and severe decrease in hydrogenation activity.Therefore,the sodium massfraction in the bulk catalyst should be controlled below 0.30% to ensure that the physicochemical properties of the catalyst remain unchanged and good hydrogenation activity is maintained.
