A Study of Husserl's "Empathy"

Abstract: Starting from the self, Husserl employs basic “intentionalities” of the self, such as perception, memory, association, and analogy, to establish connection with others. This intersubjective connection is what Husserl calls “intersubjectivity” (or co-subjectivity). “Empathy” is the key concept for elucidating “intersubjectivity”, and its essence lies in the intentionality of the self. Through analogical association, the self apperceives the body of the other as a “body - mind” unity, thereby forming intersubjectivity and subsequently constructing the objective world and the “lifeworld”. Although starting from the self is prone to being regarded as solipsism, Husserl, through empathy, clarifies the rationality of the other and the world, distinguishes the boundaries between self and other, and emphasizes that the human being is both an individual ego and a monadic co-ego. Thus, the phenomenological world possesses the characteristics of both the “solitary ego” and the “co-ego”.
