An Analysis of the Historical Contributions of Chen Xinzheng

Abstract: Chen Xinzheng was a prominent figure among the Nanyang Chinese in modern China. He made significant contributions to and had a profound impact on the Chinese democratic revolution. However, there is a relative scarcity of academic research on him. Existing studies mainly rely on materials from the Xiamen Local Chronicles, the Xiamen Overseas Chinese Chronicles, and related books. In contrast, the Biography of Mr. Chen Xinzheng, the Posthumous Works of Chen Xinzheng, and The Sin Kuo Min, housed in the Chinese Library of the National University of Singapore, have garnered little attention. These materials can greatly expand the scope of study on Chen Xinzheng. Focusing on these new historical sources, this paper outlines the life of Chen Xinzheng and summarizes his historical contributions: he sacrificed his family fortune to alleviate national crises, raised funds from various sources to provide strong financial support for the domestic democratic revolution, used his pen as a weapon and newspapers as a platform to vigorously promote democratic revolutionary ideas, devoted himself to overseas Chinese education for the inheritance of the Chinese culture, and established schools to cultivate talents.
