Exploring the Growth Trajectory of Eliminated Students in Honor Colleges from a Meritocracy Perspective
Feng Shoubo Chen Xiaohui (College of Computer Science and Technology, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou
Abstract: Honor colleges serve as elite academic platforms for high-achieving undergraduate students, typically implementing a performance-based screening and streaming mechanism centered on GPA. However, some former academic elites experience significant setbacks after being removed from these programs, falling into patterns of academic stagnation, psychological distress, and social disconnection—gradually becoming a distinct group of “academically vulnerable students”. Drawing on qualitative interviews with 10 students who were streamed out of an honor college at University Z, this paper depicts the group profile and identifies two prototypical types: the “Regretfully Excluded” and the “Disengaged and Passive”. It analyzes their shared struggles and divergent pathways across three dimensions—academic adaptation, interpersonal relationships, and self-identity. The findings call for a reconceptualization of diverse models of success and advocate for a precise, systemic support framework that attends to those who fall outside the spotlight of achievement, thereby upholding both educational equity and individual dignity.
