A Probe into Mao Zedong's Discourse on "Civilization"

Abstract: Civilization constitutes a fundamental element of Marxist historical materialism and an important component of Mao Zedong Thought. A thorough inquiry into Mao Zedong's discourse on civilization reveals its diverse and integrated character, which stems from the inheritance of elements such as spiritual civilization from Chinese civilization, the critical absorption of the development of material civilization from Western capitalist civilization, and the innovative development within the philosophical framework of the Marxist outlook on civilization. From his youthful reflections on how to “draw from the outside to nourish the inside” amid the clash between Chinese and Western civilizations, to his envisioning of “socialist civilization” and “a China ruled by a new culture and thus advanced in civilization” during the New Democratic Revolution to salvage the nation from peril, and to his practice of “creating their own civilization and happiness” during the period of socialist revolution and construction. Mao Zedong's discourse on civilization has established a people-centered theoretical dimension of civilization for Communist Party of China members, forged a readily understandable paradigm of civilizational discourse, and opened up practical domains for material, political, and spiritual civilization, serving as a crucial historical resource for the construction of the Communist Party of China's civilizational narrative system.
