The Enlightenment of the Frankfurt School's Social Psychological Theory to the Construction of Contemporary Spiritual Civilization
Tang Yanmei Song Yanhua (School of Marxism, Shanghai Jian Qiao University, Shanghai )
Abstract: This paper first traces the origins of the Frankfurt School's social psychological theory, then focuses on issues such as the instrumentalization of technical rationality within capitalist modernity. After an objective evaluation of the theory, the paper points out that although it is rooted in the context of Western capitalism, it offers referential significance for the construction of spiritual civilization in China. These include guarding against the one-sided tendencies of technical rationality, reflecting on materialized logic of consumer culture, reshaping the spiritual-nourishing function of mass culture, and consolidating spiritual consensus through the core socialist values. The paper emphasizes that drawing on these insights must be grounded in the system of socialism with Chinese characteristics, that the critical spirit should be absorbed rather than specific prescriptions copied wholesale, and that the development of spiritual civilization must serve the all-rounded development of human beings, thereby transforming spiritual alienation into spiritual abundance.
