—Transformation and Internal Logic of Marital Intergenerational Intervention

in the Context of Social Transformation

Abstract: This paper argues that the transformation of marital intergenerational intervention from “fish-rice exchange” to “mutual aid alliance” represents the outcome of balancing emotion and rationality within China’s cultural field, embodying the organic integration of traditional Chinese culture and modern economic rationality, and highlighting the distinctive connotations of Chinese mate selection practices. The persistence of marital intergenerational intervention, beyond cultural habitus, stems more fundamentally from its embeddedness in key economic elements concerning individual, family, and social development, representing a rational choice for individuals and families to cope with external environmental changes. In the context of social transformation, where risks coexist with opportunities and stability maintenance with innovation, achieving mutual aid alliance among intimate relations through marital intergenerational intervention represents a crucial choice for stabilizing marriage and family.
