A Study of Independently Used Free Morphemes in Academic Chinese Texts

—A Comparative Analysis with General Texts

Abstract： This paper argues that significant differences exist in the use of free monomorphemes between academic Chinese texts and general Chinese texts. Due to the pursuit of conciseness， precision， and logicality in academic texts， some morphemes that are bound or semi-free in general Chinese acquire a greater capacity for independent use. The capacity of a morpheme for independent use is dynamic and varies across text types： the same morpheme may be used freely in academic texts， while being less free in general texts. Furthermore， the choice of sense affects a morpheme's capacity for independent use： in academic texts， a morpheme often assumes a single， concise sense， whereas the breadth and diversity of senses in general texts reduce its frequency of independent use. These differences highlight the constraints of register on morpheme functions， providing a reference for the teaching of academic Chinese and research on register grammar.
