Revisiting Demographic Stagnation in England After the Black Death

Abstract:Theoutbreakof theBlack Death inthefourteenthcenturycausedmasive populationdeclineinEnglandandplungedthe countryintoprolongeddemogaphicstagnation.MalthusiantheoryandMarxistdoctrinehaveprovidedtheoreticalgdanceforthestudyf demographicstagnationinEnglandBothofervauableinsightsintothesocialchangesanddemogaphictagnationcausedbyeBlack Death.Therecurentoutbreaksanddevastationofplagueweretheimmediatecausesofdemographicstagnation，whilethedistorted mariagemarketandwdowremariageconstitutedsocialmechanismsthatconstraiedEngland’spopulationrecoeryHoweverheBlack Deathalsobroketh“Maltusiandeadock,”oferingEngandanopportuitytoconstructitsdemogaphicstemandcreatingodiios for its transition to modernity.
