Abstract: Solar energy-driven water electrolysis is an important way to obtain green hydrogen energy. In order to understand its development status and future challenges, a literature survey was conducted on the research progress and future trends of photovoltaic electrolysis water hydrogen production systems in recent years. The advantages of hydrogen energy as the "ultimate energy source" and the advantages of hydrogen production by electrolysis of water compared with traditional fossil fuels are introduced in detail. Among the three common solar energy hydrogen production technologies, the research progress, hydrogen production efficiency advantages and industrialization challenges of photovoltaic-electrolysis (PV-EC) systems composed by combining or integrating solar cells and water electrolysis systems are mainly introduced. In response to the challenge of improving the solar-hydrogen conversion efficiency of PV-EC systems, future research directions and strategies are prospected from three aspects.
