The Discussion of Li (Ritual),Yi(Righteousness),Wen(Form) andLi(Rationale) in Xunzi' s Theory of Rite and Its Elaborationin the Theory of Filial Piety

Abstract: Xunzi placed greatemphasisonthecompletenessandsystematic natureofLi (ritual).Inseekingapath fromexternalto interalodertablishdcompehsivessteofteoryfLi(itual),levatigLi(itual)astorofsholarlfraok. XunziheldthatLi (ritual)has“SanBen(threfoundations)”,namely,Tiandi (heavenandearth),Xianzu(ncestors),ndJunshi(rulersandteachers).Li(ritual),ishusasnthsisofthegenerativeorderofhavenandarththecomunalorderofhumankindandthe actualpolicalordr.Basedonthe“LiSanBen(treefoundationsofitual)”,Xunziadvocatedapathof“Waishuo-Neiua(extealcultivationandintealrasformation)”,irectlyoposingthatoftheZisi-MencussholXunzidistingushdbtweenth“Wen”ndthe “Li(ratinale)”ofL(ritual),arguingthatinpractice,Li(itual)shouldunifycompleteYiwiththethoroughaccommodtionofhuman sentiments.Regardingfilialpiety,hemaintainedthatthe“XiaoziZhiDao(wayofthefilialson)”shouldbebasedonthe“WenandLi (rationale)ofLi (ritualandYi.Hemphsizedteprincipleof“CongYiBucongFu(fllowingYi,otblindfolowingthefather)", andallwedcildrentoemonstratewithteirparentsbasedon“Yi”inspecificcircumstances.Heconsideredthe“Qing(entient)Wen Jujin(fullinegationofsntintadfo)”tobtepefectstateofLi(atioale),dvoatigtgulatioofQingbyLi(ial thatQingisgoveedbyYi.InsummaryXunzi’stheoryofflialpietyrefltsuityfLi(itual),YindQing,whereinLi(ial) andYitakeprecedence,whileQingmustberegulatedbyLi(ritual)andYitoachievethegenuineexpressionofhumanreltioshipsand the cultivation of virtue.
