Color in Chinese Painting:Aesthetic Semantics and Innovations in Technique

Abstract:This studyexamines howcolorin Chinese painting generates meaning within the traditional discourseand how it canberefinedundercontemporarymaterialsandtechniques.Using acorpus of320representative works,wequantifythe incidenceof“pronouncedcoloration”;with40participantsweaess warmth-coolnessandperceived pleasantnessandthrough reconstructions onraw andsized Xuan paper we record saturation-layer curves.Results show:since theTang dynastythe share of pronounced colorationrisesandremains highthrough the Ming-Qingand today;warm paletesyield higher pleasantnes, whereas coolpaletes better sustain senses ofserenityand distance; marginal gains taper around6-8layers.Accordingly,we proposeastaged workflow—phasedcoloration,multi-layerlight washes,and zonal glazing—supported by materialcompounding and digital pre-visualization,offering anactionable pathway forcolor planning inpublic artand cross-media practice.
