The Establishment and Characteristics of the Japanese School Education System in Modern Shanghai

Abstract：AftertheMeijiRestoration，hanghaiwithitsvantageousgeograpicallocationandimmenseeconomicpotentialbe cameakeydestiationforJapan’soverseasexpansioninthemodereraAstenumberofJapaeseresdentsinShanghai increasedthe educationalneedsoftheirchdrenbecameicreasinglyugentInespose，JapanesesholsweregrauallstablishedinSangaibe giningwithprimaryducationandexpandingtoscondaryeducation，includingothgeneralandocatioaleducationDuringthirdevelopment，thesescholssrictlyfolowedteeducatioallawsanddecreesissuedytheJapanesegovermentatthetimemphasiingompulsoryprimaryeducationandvocationaleducationasinmainlandJapan.However，theyalsodeveloedadistinctivefeaturenotfoundin Japan：theprioritygiventoestablishinggils’secondaryshols.AsJapanintensifditsmlitaryaggresiontheJapaneesolsin Shanghai weregraduallyincorporated into thewartimesystemand wereeventuallyclosedafterJapan’sdefeat.
