On the Interactions among Various Regions in Modern Jiangnan

- A Case Study of the Cheng Family in Suzhou Ying Qian

Abstract：TakingtheChengfamilyasapointofentry，wecanreveal tosomeextenttheinteractionsamongvariousregions inJiang nan （Shanghai，Suzhou，Huzhou，Ningbo，etc.）sincethe modemera.TheChengs movedfrom Anhuito Suzhou duringtheMing Dynasty andlatershiftedtheirbusinessfocus toShangaiafterLiXiuchengcapturedSuzhouTheyemploednumerousprofesionalmanagersfrom Zhejiang，eventuallybecomingoneofShanghai’sprominentqianzhuang（nativebank）families.Thevicisstudesanddevelopmentof the ChengfamilyeflecttheclosecoectionsamongtheintealregionsofJiangnan—ShanghaiSuzhouZhejangandAnu.Whileang haiundoubtedyservedasthecoreofodernJiangnanitalsodrovethedevelopmentandtransformationofcitiesinvariousregionsof Jiangnan.ItwasthroughthisdynaicofsiphoninganddifusionthatJiangnan’surbansystemtransitiondfromacentral-placedoated model to a network-dominated one.
