A Study of the Murals in the Sanguan（Three Deities） Temple at Dushu Village， Yu County， Hebei Province

Abstract：Thisstudytakes themuralsoftheSnguanTempleinDushuVilage，YuCounty，HebeiProvinceastheresearchobject， focusingontereligiouscootatiosandsocialmotivationsof isuniquecofiguratio.TeainwalloftistpleontiestetaditionalSanguanschema，depictingtheSanguanof Heaven，Earth，and Waterandtheirentourage.Amongthem，theChicken-headedand Rabit-headedDeitisareidentifiedastheSixDingDivineGeneralsofTaoism，whichembodythesymbolismofsunadmooncultivation andposessthefunctionsof“eliminatingevildemonsandcontrolingloudsandrain”TheSizhiGongcao（TheFourDutyDeities）areesponsiblefortransmitigdocuentsforteasessmentofgoodandevilefletingtecoecootationofteSanguanbelief—"estoing blesings，forgivingsins，anddispelingmisfortunes.Teastenand westmwallsunusuallyabandonthethmeoftheSangan’sinspectiontours，insteadusingnarativepaintingsbasedontheTishangGaningPian（TreatiseoftheExaledOneonResponseandRetribu tion）asthemainsubject.TheimagesaredirectlyderivedfromtewodblockprintsofteTishangGanyingPianTushuo（ustratedExplanationoftheTeatiseoftheExaltedOneonResponseandRetrbution），andteselectedcontentemphasizes temessuchas“forueand misfortuneareself-invitedand“retributionforgoodandevil”，whichalignscloselywiththereligiousteachingof“abandoningeviland cultivatinggodess”ineguanJinitureftereeDets），esponingtoplarsialanfvertisaste andprologinglife.Fromtheperspectiveofscialchange，thetransformationoftesemuralsoriginatedfromtetrendoforaleducation throughmoraityboksintheYuCountyareaduringthemid-to-lateQingDynasty.EmperorJiaqing'spolicyofstrengtheninggassots moraleducatioiesposetoeticultdistubancspromptdshiftinuralsfodeityoshiptoalarativekingillae temples a visual vehicle for the official governance strategyof“rejecting heterodoxyand upholding orthodoxy”.
