Comparison of Cold Resistance in Three Soft-seed Pomegranate Cultivars from Southern Xinjiang

Abstract:【Objective】Toaddressthe issueofwinter freezing injury insoft-seed pomegranates in Southern Xinjiang,this studydeterminedthephysiologicalandbiochemical indices relatedtocoldresistanceofthree maincultivatedpomegranate varieties,clarifiedthedifferencesincoldhardinessamongthethreevarieties,ndtherebyprovidedascientificbasisfortheindustrial layoutof thepomegranate industryinSouthern Xinjiang.【Methods】Takingthreesoft-sed pomegranatecultivars,Tunisian Soft-seed,MuleandBlack-SeedSweet,cultivatedinTumushukeastest materials,with theironeyearolddormantbranchesas experimental samples,anartificial simulatedlow-temperature environment method was adopted.Thechanges in physiological andbiochemicalindices related tocoldresistanceoftebranchesofthethre soft-seedpomegranatevarietieswere measuredunder low-temperature conditions of 4∘C ( CK) , 0°C , -5∘C , -10∘C and -15∘C . The cold hardiness of the three varieties was comprehensively evaluated by combining the Logistic equation (for LT50 calculation) and the membership function method.【Results】The relative electricalconductivityandmalondialdehyde(MDA)contentof theone-year-old branches of Mule andBlack-See Swet werelower thanthoseofTunisian Soft-seed.Onthecontrary,thecontents of soluble proteinand proline,as wellassuperoxidedismutase(SOD)activityof Tunisian Soft-seed were the lowest,whilethoseofMuleandBlackSeed Sweet were relativelyhigher.Comprehensiveanalysisbythe membershipfunction methodbasedonmultiplephysiological indicesshowedthattheorderofcold hardinessof thethreesoft-seedpomegranatevarietiesfrom strongestto weakest was: Black-Seed Sweet > Mule > Tunisian Soft-seed. 【Conclusion】 The results of this study provide important scientific basis and practical guidance for the development of the soft-seed pomegranate industry in Southern Xinjiang.
