Exploration of Balint Group Activities in Improving Empathy among Medical Students during Clinical Internship

Abstract: Objective To explore the efectiveness of Balint group activities on improving the empathy ability of medical intems during clinical teaching.Methods Five-year clinical medical interns in thePediatrics Department from January 2O22 to December 2O24 were selected and randomly divided into the experimental group 1 ),which participated in weekly Balint group activities for 5 weeks,and the control group ( n =100), which received conventional teaching including case discussions,teaching rounds,and operational instruction.The Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professionals Version (JSE-HP),which focuses on cognitive empathy in healthcare contexts,was used to assess empathy ability before and after the internship.Results The diffrence in empathy ability between the control and experimental groups was significant. The empathy ability of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group.Conclusion Balint group activities are effctive in clinical intermship teaching,significantly improving the empathy ability of medical interns,and can serve as an important component of practical medical humanities education.
