Effects of sulfadiazine on the physiology and behavior of juvenile Sebastes schlegelii

Abstract:This study focused on juvenile Sebastes schlegelii,an important economic fish species in the northern coastal areas of China. Through a 24-day indoor semi一static exposure experiment,the toxic effects of different concentrations of sulfadiazine (0,3,6,9mg/L )on its physiological function and group behavior were systematically explored. The results showed that sulfadiazine exposure exerted significant dose-and time-dependent effect on juvenile S . schlegelii. At the physiological level, low concentration( 3mg/L initially induce an increase in the activity of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione S- transferase(GST),indicating an adaptive reponse;however,this effect disappeared after prolonged exposure. Medium to high concentrations (⩾6mg/L )impaired the antioxidant system (inhibition of GST activity),aggravated lipid peroxidation [elevated malondialdehyde(MDA) content],and triggered an inflammatory response (increased TNF-α levels). At the behavioral level, sulfadiazine exposure significant reduced swimming speed and disrupted the social structure of the fish group,manifested as increased inter-individual distances, suggesting weakened group cohesion and a tendency toward dispersion. These findings indicate that sulfadiazine causes multidimensional damage to the physiological health of juvenile S. schlegelii by inducing oxidative stress and inflammatory response,ultimately leading to reduced locomotor capacity and disrupted social behavior. This study provides important experimental evidence for assessing the ecological risks of sulfonamide antibiotics inaquaculture environment.
