ZHAO Zhongyin's Experience in Treating Meibomian Gland Dysfunction-Associated Dry Eye Syndrome by Applying Unblocking the Five Channels Method

AbstractThisarticle summarizes Professor ZHAO Zhongyin’s clinical experience in treating meibomian glanddysfunction（MGD）-associated dry eye syndrome based on the theory of coexistence of drynessand dampness，applying unblocking the five channelsmethod.It holds that the imbalance between dryness and dampness is the key pathogenic mechanisms of MGD-associated dry eye syndrome. It particularly emphasizes the crucial role of phlegm-dampness inthe onset of MGD-assciated dry eye syndrome and the significant impact of improper work and rest on the recurrenceof the disease.The basic treatment principle proposed is“unblocking the five channels and providing an outlet for phlegm-dampness”，advocating theuse of Chenpi （Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium），Muxiang（Aucklandiae Radix），Shengjiang（Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens），etc.toregulate the channels of water and food digestion;the use of Dahuang（Rhei Radix Et Rhizoma），Mangxiao（Natrii Sulfas），and Huomaren（CannabisFructus）to regulate the intestinal excretion channel;theuse of Zexie（Alismatis Rhizoma），Cheqianzi（Plantaginis Semen），and Zhuling（Polyporus），etc.toregulate the urinary excretion channel;andtheuseof Yuxingcao（Houttyniae Herba），Jingjie（Schizonepetae Herba），Guizhi（Cinnamomi Ramulus），and Xixin （Asari Radix EtRhizoma），etc.to regulate therespiratory channel of the nose and lungsandthe sweat pores.At the same time，during clinical treatment，it isnecessary to pay atention to regulating work and rest，and not toneglect nourishing yinto prevent excessive dryness from harming the body.One test case isattached.
