(Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Longnan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Longnan 341700, Jiangxi, China) Abstract: Objective To investigate the effects of modified Zhisou powder on TCM syndrome scores, pulmonary function, and inflammatory markers in patients with community acquired pneumonia (CAP). Methods A total of 64 patients diagnosed with community acquired pneumonia and treated at Longnan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine between August 2022 and September 2024 were enrolled as study participants and subsequently assigned, via a random number table method, to either a control group or a study group, with 32 patients in each group. The control group received routine symptomatic treatment using conventional Western medications alone, whereas the study group was administered a modified Zhisou powder. The two groups were compared in terms of total treatment response rate, TCM syndrome scores (cough, dyspnea, chest pain, and pulmonary moist rales), pulmonary function [forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV 1 ), and FEV 1 /FVC], inflammatory indexes (C-reactive protein and procalcitonin), and D-dimer level. Results Compared with the control group, in which the total treatment response rate was 78.13%, the study group showed a higher total treatment response rate, accounting for 96.88% (P<0.05). After 2 weeks of treatment, the study group had lower TCM syndrome scores than the control group, higher levels of pulmonary function indexes (FVC, FEV 1 , and FEV 1 /FVC) than the control group, and lower levels of C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, and D-dimer than the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion The modified Zhisou powder demonstrates definite clinical efficacy in the treatment of patients with community acquired pneumonia, exerting positive effects on alleviating the clinical symptoms of patients, improving their pulmonary function, and reducing their plasma D-dimer and inflammatory factor levels.
