A Study on the Culture of Headwear from the Perspective of Ancient Chinese Character Etymology

(a.SchoolofFashion,.HueiIntangileCulturalGeneticResearchCenter,WuhanTextileUniversity,Wuhan43073,Cina) Abstract:Thispaper explorestheoriginsofheadwearandthe meaningsoftheterms"mian"(冕),“bian”(弁),and "guan" (冠)duringthepre-Qinperiod,employingancientChinesecharacteretymologyastheanalyticalframework.Specificallyit analyzestheirorigins,istoricalevolutionandtheevolvingmeaningsofthircharacterstructuresovertime.Thus,tissearch reaffirms theoriginsofheadwearandelucidatestheculturalimplicationsderivedfromit.Thefindingsrevealthat "mian"(冕) wasanornamentalheadpiecewornbyindividualsofhighstatusinancienttimes,typicallybeforetheXiadynasty.Notablyit featureddistinctivedecorativeanimalhorsthatsymbolizedpower,status,andrank.Incontrast,theoriginalmeaningsof"bian" (弁)and"guan"(冠)refertothecoming-of-ageceremonyforancientmalesattwenty,markingtheirtransitionintoadulthood andtheaquisitionofadultsocialrightsandresponsibilities.Fromthisperspective,theculturalconnotationsoftheorigisof “mian,”“bian,”and "guan"inthepre-Qinperiodprimarilyencompasstheextensionofsurvivalneeds,thesymbolizationof social hierarchy,and the embodiment of ritual and adulthood ceremonies.
