Comparison of growth characteristics and fruit quality of different blueberry cultivars grafted on brightwell rootstock

Abstract: To address the problems of poor soil adaptability and high cost of substrate cultivation in blueberry, this study used rabbit-eye blueberry brightwell as rootstock, and three cultivars (Misty, O'Neal and Duke) as scions. A double “ V” grafting method was adopted to conduct the experiment in Qingdao. The survival rate, growth and fruit quality of grafted seedlings and cuttage seedlings were compared. The results showed that the grafted seedlings of Misty had the highest survival rate (85.6%) ,and their new shoot growth was significantly higher than those of other rootstock-scion combinations. The grafted seedlings of alltested cultivars with brightwell as rootstock exhibited significantly higher new shoot growth, stem diameter, chlorophyll content, single fruit weight, vitamin C content and anthocyanin content, as wellas lower titratable acid content, compared with cuttage seedlings, resulting in significantly improved fruit quality.
