Abstract:To investigate the efects of Chineseherbal medicines on rumen function in Hu sheep,thisstudyused a total mixedration(TMR)asthebasal diet,with supplementary perilla seed (T1),quisqualis fruit(T2),astragalusroot(T3),darkplumfruit(T4),andpumpkinseed(T5),whileaTMRwithoutChineseherbalmedicines wassetasthecontrol(CK).Relevant indicators weredeterminedafter48hoursofinvitrorumen fermentation usingrumenfluid.Theresultsshowedthattherewerenosignificantchanges inthepHof invitro rumen fermentation fluid between the treatment groups and the control grouup ( P>0.05 ). The cumulative gas production of rumen fermentation in T4 was significantly higher than that in the control ( P<0.05 ),while that in T2 was significantly lower than that in thecontrol ( P <0.05).Themethane production of rumen fermentation in T2 wassignificantly lower than that in thecontrol( P< 0.05),andtheacetate-to-propionateratioinrumenfermentationfluidofT2wassignificantlyhigherthanthat inthecontrol ( P <0.05).These findings indicated that dietary supplementation with quisqualis fruit could help achieve the dual goals of reducing greehouse gasemissions and improving feed energyconversion eficiency.Regarding nutrient degradation,the degradationratesof neutral detergentfiberandaciddetergent fiberinT1and T5were significantlyhigherthan thoseinthe control ( P <0.05).This may be attributed to the fact that the active components in perilla seedand pumpkin seed can promotetheproliferationoffiber-degradingbacteria,therebyenhancingthedegradationeficiencyofcarbohydratessuchascelluloseand hemicellulose.Thedrymater degradation rateinT2 wassignificantlylower than that in thecontrol ( P<0.05 ). There were no significant differences in proteindegradationrates between T1,T2,T3,T4,T5and thecontrol ( P>0.05 ). Inconclusion,perillaseedand pumpkinseedcan efectively improve thedegradationeficiencyofcarbohydrates suchas cellulose and hemicelulose,whilequisqualis fruitsignificantlysuppresssrumen fermentationgasproduction.Thisstudy providesatheoreticalbasis forimproving feedutilization eficiencyandreducinggreehousegasemissions through theuse of Chinese herbal medicine additives.
