Protecting Nanhui Shoal and Designing Human-Ocean Interaction Zones in the Yangtze River Estuary

Abstract：The Nanhui areaat the mouth of the Yangtze River exhibits geographical characteristics of both an estuarinedeltaandamarine bay.Inrecent years，newly formed shoals inthis region have becomeoneof the most popular coastalrecreation spaces for residents of Shanghai.Bycollecting topographicdata，sateliteremote sensing imagery，and relevant literature，this study investigates current challenges facing the Nanhui shoal and proposes long-termconservation strategies fortidal flats and wetlands，along withrecommendations for expanding public access tocoastalareas．The main findings areas folows：（1）Inrecent years，theNanhui shoal has faced multiple hazards，includingoastalerosion，ivasionbySpartinaalternifora（smoothcodgrass），ndlocaledriurrentocueces.（2）The Lingang Coastal Ecological Protection and Restoration Project in Shanghai has successfully curbed ongoing beach erosionand completely eradicated Spartinaalterniflora fromthearea.（3）Inteligent management measures for the Nanui shoal havebeen formulated，including proposals for establishing a digital foundationand implementing smart management systems.（4）It is recommended that the Nanhui shoal be developed intoa marine park，with integrated zoning comprisingatidalflatconservationarea，an inland lakewetland zone，an science popularization corridor，andacoastalrecreationarea．Aditionally，safetyboundaries forrecreationalactivitieshavebeendelieated based on identified rip current zones.
