Abstract: In recent years, inappropriate agronomic measures have led to increased soil acidification in China's arable land, which has become one of the major factors limiting the sustainable development of agriculture in China. Soil acidification causes activation of metal ions, decreases in fertility and affects the structure and function of soil microbial communities. Among them, aluminum activation hinders plant root growth and nutrient uptake, restricts cell mitosis, and leads to poor plant growth. Traditionally, soil acidity has been reduced and Al toxicity mitigated by application of alkaline materials, but the process is not sustainable. Microorganisms have advantages in direct neutralization of H+ and secretion of organic acids to chelate Al3+ ,which can be used to alleviate acid-aluminum toxicity. This paper reviews the causes and hazards of soil acidification, traditional methods of acid-aluminum mitigation and the potential of microorganisms in mitigating acid-aluminum hazards. It aims to provide a scientific basis for agricultural production in acidified soil areas.
