WANGShi-yong,WANGLin-dong

Abstract:Media discourse plays an important role in constructing group identities.Focusing on Yan'an's Jiefang Daily and Xinhua Daily froml938 to 1945,this articleexamines the logic ofhow red newspapers reshaped theidentity of migrants to the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region during theperiodof full-scale resistance against Japaneseaggresion, framing themas“builders.”The study finds thatthis identityreconstructionstemmed fromthree factors:theclarificationof identity withinthecontextof thenationwideWarofResistanceAgainst JapaneseAggression;theneed toconstruct the image of the BorderRegionamid the CCP-KMTpublic opinion struggle;and thedual atributes of wartime migrants.Through linguistic transformation, exemplary reporting on model figures, and narratives emphasizing labor practices, red newspapers molded the migrants into“builders.” This approach not only fostered their identification with this new role and encouraged their active participation in the political, economic, and cultural developmentof the BorderRegion, butalsostrengthened their political identification with the Communist Party of China.
