From“Single-Modality”to“Multi-Modality"：AParadigmatic ShiftToward the Algorithm-Emotion-MeaningTriad-——AReviewofComputational Communication Research （2025）

Abstract：Drawing onasystematic review and thematic coding of69 representative studies published over the past year inQl intemationalcommunication journals and CSSCI Chinese journals in journalismandcommunication， this paper maps the research landscape of Computational Communication in 2025.Overallfindings indicate a disciplinaryshift from“technicalcapability”to“social mechanism”，which isadvancing simultaneously across theory，topics，andmethods.Theoretically，thefieldismovingfrom“computability”toward“sociality”，withgrowing attention to the synergistic dynamics among algorithms，emotions，and meaning.On the thematic level，eight majorresearch clusters have emerged.Methodologicall，research is transitioning from single-modality to multi-modalityandfromalgorithmicoptimizationtosemanticintegration，markingtheriseofa“hybridinterpretive paradigm".Based on these insights，the paper outlines threefuture research agendas： long-term cros-platform audits and reproducibility enhancement，thedevelopment of localized open datasets and evaluation benchmarks，and the exploration of governance models centeredonuser empowerment，interpretability，and participatory design.
