From“Generalized Symmetry”to “Philosophy of Design":The Tension in Human-Object Relations inLatour'sPhilosophy of Technology

XIA Yun-xuan,WUJing

Abstract:Addressing the material turn in Communication Studies, this article examines the tension between materialpowerand humanagencyinBrunoLatour’sphilosophyof technology.Ittraces twokeythreads inLatour's work: the embedding of human intention via design and inscription, and the principle of generalized symmetry emphasizing objectagency.Whileconcepts like“quasi-objects”alow Latour to bridge the subject-object divide, his later shift toward a philosophyof design re-privileges human intention, creating internal contradictions. Postphenomenologyand Critical Constructivismrespond tothis dilemma;while pinpointingANT's limitations, they fundamentallyaffirm thevalidityofitsexplanatoryframework.Tracingthis trajectorythearticleoers heuristictools to understand media technology’s dual nature as both “intention carrier”and“active participant”.
