From“Generalized Symmetry”to “Philosophy of Design"：The Tension in Human-Object Relations inLatour'sPhilosophy of Technology

Abstract：Addressing the material turn in Communication Studies，this article examines the tension between materialpowerand humanagencyinBrunoLatour’sphilosophyof technology.Ittraces twokeythreads inLatour's work： the embedding of human intention via design and inscription，and the principle of generalized symmetry emphasizing objectagency.Whileconcepts like“quasi-objects”alow Latour to bridge the subject-object divide， his later shift toward a philosophyof design re-privileges human intention，creating internal contradictions. Postphenomenologyand Critical Constructivismrespond tothis dilemma;while pinpointingANT's limitations，they fundamentallyaffirm thevalidityofitsexplanatoryframework.Tracingthis trajectorythearticleoers heuristictools to understand media technology’s dual nature as both “intention carrier”and“active participant”.
