Effect of Naringenin and Citric Acid Application Before Curing on the Quality of Upper Leaves of Flue-Cured Tobacco

Abstract： This study aims to improvie the post-curing quality of the upper leaves of flue-cured tobacco. The leaves of 'Yunyan 87' were treated with 1 g/L naringenin or 0.1 g/L citric acid before curing， and the physical properties， chemical components， appearance traits， and economic traits of flue-cured tobacco leaves were analyzed. The results showed that compared with the treatment with no spraying of exogenous substances， the flue-cured tobacco leaves treated with naringenin showed increased specific leaf weight， high stability of the physical indexes （such as specific leaf weight， leaf thickness， and leaf length）， increased content of reducing sugar， and optimized ratio of sugar to nicotine and ratio of potassium to chlorine. Moreover， the leaf color， maturity， structure and other indicators were significantly improved， and the proportion of high-grade upper leaves was increased. Although spraying citric acid increased the single leaf weight and leaf area of flue-cured tobacco， it led to the unbalance ratio of sugar to nicotine and declined economic traits. In summary， spraying 1 g/L naringenin before curing effectively improved the physical and chemical properties of the upper leaves of flue-cured tobacco， which was of great significance for improving the industrial availability of the upper leaves.
