Effect of Different Proportions of Chicken Manure Addition on the Composting of Tobacco Waste

Abstract: This study aims to reveal the effect of different proportions of chicken manure addition on temperature fluctuations and organic matter degradation of tobacco waste during composting. The composting experiment was carried out with three treatments: pure tobacco waste (T1), tobacco waste : chicken manure = 1 : 0.278 (T2), and tobacco waste : chicken manure = 1 : 1.425 (T3). The effect of different proportions of chicken manure addition on pile temperature, the degradation rates of hemicellulose, cellulose, lignin, and nicotine, as well as the loss rates of total nitrogen (N) and organic carbon (C) during the composting process was studied. The results indicated that compared with the T1, both T2 and T3 entered the high-temperature phase 5 d earlier, with the duration of high temperatures extended by 5 and 7 d, respectively. At the end of composting, compared with the T1, the T2 and T3 showed significant increases of 57.54% and 58.87% in the hemicellulose degradation rate, significant increases of 11.28% and 11.47% in the cellulose degradation rate, and significant decreases of 26.99% and 34.54% in total N loss rate, respectively. At the end of composting, no significant differences were observed among treatments in terms of lignin degradation rate, nicotine degradation rate, and organic C loss rate. In conclusion, the addition of chicken manure accelerated the temperature rise and prolonged the high-temperature phase during the composting of tobacco waste, enhanced the degradation rates of hemicellulose and cellulose, and reduced N loss. Among the treatments, the T3 (tobacco waste : chicken manure = 1 : 1.425) demonstrated the most favorable composting performance.
