Effect of Different Sowing Dates in Spring and Summer on Agronomic Traits of Different Maize Varieties in Hunan Province

Abstract: To select maize varieties with high and stable yields and suitable for sowing in spring and summer in Hunan Province, this study used 18 commercially available maize varieties as materials to systematically compare the yield, growth period, stress resistance, and overall field performance of each variety between spring sowing and summer sowing. The results showed that sowing date and its interaction with variety had highly significant effect on maize grain yield. Compared with spring sowing, summer sowing resulted in 11–17 d shortening in growth period, increases of 11.5–181.0 °C in effective accumulative temperature, decreases of 14.7%–27.3% in plant height, decreases of 14.4%–26.8% in ear height, and decreases of 26.3%–71.1% in grain yield. Cluster analysis was conducted on the coefficients of variation of maize grain yield, screening out five maize varieties ('Qingqing 700', 'Kangnongyu 007', 'Fudan 2', 'Tongyu 609', and 'Zhengda 999') belonging to the stable yield type, which accounted for 27.8% of the total tested maize varieties. Among them, 'Qingqing 700', 'Kangnongyu 007', and 'Tongyu 609' had the grain yields higher than 650 kg/667m² under spring sowing and 370 kg/667m² under summer sowing and exhibited strong disease resistance, being suitable for spring and summer sowing in Hunan Province.
