Topic Mining and Frame Narratives of Ice and Snow Sports News Based on the BERTopic Model

—A Case Study of Relevant Reports in People's Daily

Abstract： With the in-depth implementation of the concept that “ice and snow are also assets of gold and silver” and the continuous advancement of the national ice and snow economy strategy， ice and snow sports have become an important vehicle for promoting regional development and building a strong sporting nation. Based on the BERTopic model and framing theory in qualitative research， this paper conducts a study on topic mining and frame narratives of 1 556 ice and snow sports news articles from People’s Daily between March 2016 and

October 2025. Sixteen core topics and four types of frames are identified， which together form a complete narrative system of ice and snow sports in the national mainstream media. Semantically， the frames present a “core-periphery” distribution and form a synergistic mechanism in function. The dynamic temporal evolution of topics reflects the precise response of mainstream media to the dynamics of national strategies. People’s Daily has promoted ice and snow

sports from a professional field to the public vision， and ultimately solidified them into public memory and social identity. It is recommended that mainstream media should further strengthen the synergy and linkage among the four frames in subsequent reports; construct differentiated and targeted regional development narratives according to ice and snow practices in different regions; further expand the narrative space of the cultural inheritance frame to enhance the historical depth and cultural confidence of ice and snow sports; mainstream media such as People's Daily should strengthen cooperation with diverse stakeholders to promote the transformation of ice and snow sports communication from “one-way output” to “two-way interaction”.
