Abstract:TheWannan Incident was notonlyacrucialturning pointintherelationship betweentheChinese Nationalist Party (KMT)and the Communist Party of China (CPC) during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Ag一 gresion,but also marked the starting pointof widespread intermational attention to KMT-CPCrelations.EvenBrit一 ain,which hadalways shownrestraintonthis isse,began toattempt intervention.AfterJapan launched its fullscale warofaggressionagainst China,although Britain had some understandingofthe CPC's policies andactions inresist一 ingJapan,it never gotinvolved in KMT-CPCrelations to avoid provoking the KMT.Following the outbreak of the Wan nan Incident,British Ambassador to China Archibald Clark Kerpaid close atention to the development of the situation.Hesubmittdadetailedreport tohis homecountryassoonas possibleand criticized theKMT'santi-Com一 munist actions.Asthe United States and the Soviet Unionrespondedoneafter another,Britain graduallatached importance to theincident.To preventa civil warbetween the KMTandthe CPC,Britain tried to joinforces with the United States to put presure on the KMT.Later,as KMT-CPC relations tended to ease and due to changes in the international situation,Britaineventuallyabandoned itsinterventionplanandreturedtoitsstanceofsupportingthe KMT.This processdeepened Britain's understanding of the CPC and exerted a certain impact on Sino-British rela一 tions during the war.
