Identification and Evaluation of Resistance to Sugarcane Smut in Sugarcane Hybrids (F1) with Germplasm of Saccharum arundinaceum and S. spontaneum

Abstract: Sugarcane smut disease is one of the most serious diseases afecting sugarcane,and resistant breeding is the most economicaland efective measure for its control. Inthis study,two inoculation methods (puncturing inoculation and dipping inoculation) were adopted to identify the smut resistance of Saccharum complex hybrid F1 with wild germplasm bloodlines.The results showed that among the 31 ASF1 materials tested by dipping inoculation,6 materials (accounting for 19.35% ) exhibited a comprehensive resistance level of high resistance (HR),4 materials (12.90%) showed resistance 1 (Rl),1 material (3.23%) presented resistance 2 (R2),2 materials (6.45%) displayed moderate resistance (MR), 12 materials (38.71%) )showed moderate susceptibility (MS), 6 materials (19.35%) presented susceptibilityl(S1),no materials were clasifiedassusceptbility2(S2),highsusceptibility1(HS1)orhigh susceptibilityGade 2 (HS2).In the puncturing inoculation test, 4 materials (12.90%) showed a comprehensive resistance level ofMR,9 materials (29.03%) showed MS,10 materials (32.26%) presented S1,6 materials (19.35%) showed S2,1 material (3.23%) 2 wasclassifiedas HS1 and another1 material (3.23%) asHS2,nomaterialswere identified asHR,R1 orR2.The incidence of sugarcane smut in 83.87% of the tested materials under puncturing inoculation was significantly higher than that under dipping inoculation.Moreover,the proportionof materials with a comprehensive resistance levelranging from HR to MR was 41.94% under dip inoculation,which was higher than the 12.90% under needle-prick inoculation. This study would provide innovative breeding materials for sugarcane smut-resistant breeding anda scientific basis for parent selection and matching.
