Effects of vermicompost application on soil properties and rice growth in saline-alkali paddy fields

ABSTRACT:This studyinvestigated the effects of vermicompost applicationon rice growth,root vigor and saline-alkali soil properties toestablishatheoreticalfoundationforsustainablericeproductioninsaline-alkalisoil.Usingricecultivar Huaidao5 in a pot experiment,five treatments were established based on vermicompost adition rates [O(control), 0.5% , 1.0% , 1.5% and 2.5% of soil weight]. The results showed that vermicompost application under potting conditions increased soil organic matter,nitrogen,phosphorus nutrient contents and soil salinity,and decreased soil pH . Vermicompost aplication significantly enhanced the growth of rice roots and above-ground parts and increased rice yield, with a maximum increase of 1035.6% . The application of vermicompost increased the vigor of rice root. At the 2.5% application rate,the reduction intensity of rice root increased by 539.1% , 387.9% and 496.4% ,while root sap volume increased by 96.9% , 99.4% and 249.3% at tillering,heading and maturity stages,respectively,compared to control. The sap composition showed significant increases in soluble sugar and amino acid contents with higher vermicompost dosages. In conclusion,applying vermicompost was beneficial for saline-alkali soil improvement and rice growth.
