Abstract: [Purpose] To investigate the efects of different additions of Lycium barbarum residue in diet on delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH), xylene-induced ear swelling, and egg white-induced footpad sweling in mice. [Methods] A total of 20o Kunming mice (21-day-old) were randomly divided into five groups, with 40 mice in each group. Group I was the control group (without L barbarum residue in diet), and groups II, II, IV and ΔV were fed diets containing 2% 5 4% , 6% ,and 8% L. barbarum residue, respectively. The mice were subjected to delayed-type hypersensitivity test, xylene-induced ear allergic swelling test and egg white-induced footpad inflammation test. 「Results] Compared with the control groun. the right hind footnads of mice in grouns Il. IV and V showed significant swelling after injection of 10% chicken erythrocyte suspension for one hour; after injection for 24 hours, all experimental groups showed significant swelling, among them, group IV showing the most significant swelling. In the xylene-induced ear swelling test, the ear swelling degree of male mice was higher than that of female mice.Feeding diets containing L. barbarum residue could significantly reduce ear swelling, with group IV showing the most significant improvement. One hour after egg white injection, the footpad swelling of mice was most obvious, and it basically subsided after four hours. The footpad swelling subsided more significantly in groups ll and IV : [Conclusion] Adding different contents of L . barbarum residue to the diet of mice can enhance the DTH response in mice while inhibiting xylene-induced ear sweling and egg white-induced footpad swelling, that is, effectively reduce inflammation and allergic reactions in mice, indicating that L barbarum residue has the functions of enhancing cellular immunity, anti-inflammation, and anti-allergy.
