Development and Application of Continuous Measurement Device for Forest Tree Diameter at Breast Height

Abstract:To mettheurgentneedforhigh-frequencyandautomatedmeasurementof treediameteratbreastheight in forest ecological monitoring,a continuous measurement device for tree diameter at breast height based on Internetof Thingstechnologyis designed and implemented.This device took the ESP32(a low-cost and low-power microcontroler integrating Wi-Fiand Bluetooth functions launched by Espressif SystemsofChina)as thecorecomponent,integrated high-precision displacement sensors,synchronous belt drive structures and wirelesscommunication modules,and completed thereal-timecollectionof dataonthediameter changesof trees at breast height.Itsimultaneously possessed the effcientstoragecapacityforcollecteddata as wellas the stableremote transmissonfunction.Toverifythe performance of the device,twodiferenttre species (ashand larch)were selected andaone-year field experiment was carriedout in theforestfarmonthecampusof Northeast Forestry University.The monitoring results showedthatthis system canaccuratelyreflectthe variationcharacteristicsofthediameter atchest heightof trees during the growthperiodandthe dormant period. Its measurement error was controlled within 0.1% and was highly consistent with the manual measurement results ( R2=0.91 ).Furthermore,by combining the continuous diameter at breast height data with the measured tree height,a bivariatebiomass model wasused to calculate the annual carbon sink variationof individual trees,providing a reliable technical pathfor the dynamic estimation of individual tree carbon storage.
