Developing the Chinese Approach to Provenance： A Discusson with Comrades Ding Haibin and Mo Huiru He Jiasun

Abstract：The principleof provenance，which originated in18th-century France，has evolved through various archival management practices intoahigh-level foundational theoryofarchival sciencebasedon historicism.Theunderstanding ofarchival "provenance"has also expanded froma narrow focus on the "creating entity" to the broader conceptof the "processof humansocial activities"，a perspective first proposed byChinesescholars asthe"broadconceptof provenance". Correspondingly，the"broad provenanceconnections"refers to whatiscommonlyknownasthe "historicalconnections"among recordsandarchives，embodying theconcreteand substantive essenceoforganicrelationships.Thisprovidesamore scientific foundationfortheoverarchingroleof provenanceconnectionanditsunitywith narower thematic，temporal，and formal conections.roadtaticmpoal，adfoalecos，nteotrnd，areelatedtoecodseatie. The"PrincipleofPertinence"，which wasdeliberatelyrendered intoChineseasthe"Shiyou Principle"（literally"Matter/ Subject Principle"），isaclasificationmethodbasedsolelyonbroadthematicrelevanceof documentcontent.Itisappicable onlyforretrieval purposesand fundamentallyunsuitable forthe physical arrngementof archives.The "postmodern concept of proveance" proposed by Canadian scholar Terry Cook and the "broad conceptofprovenance" with Chinese characteristics bothidentifyhumansocialactivitiesindocumentcreationasthesourceofdocuments.Thedifferenceliesintheirphilosophical foundations.The former describes document provenance in a more abstract，dynamic，and complex manner，while the lateroffersasimpler，moreclearlyboundeddescription.Theater'spracticalapplicabilitysurpasses thefomer，ablinga comprehensive explanationofnew phenomena inactivities such as electronic document management anddata management.

来源原则自其于19世纪40年代诞生于法国始，历经一百八十多年多元发展变化，今日它依然仅为低层次的档案分类整理理论，还是已经发展为高层次的、最具档案学特色的重要基础理论？《中国档案》2025年第1期刊登的丁海斌、莫惠茹同志的文章，显然认同前一种主张，要求“重新认识来源原则”“还事物的本来面目”。（剩余30076字）
