Abstract:To address the issues of bacterial growthand oxidative yelowing in cotton fabrics,Mailard reaction products (MRPs) of biobased polyglutamic acid and glucose for the functional finishing of cationized coton fabrics, aiming to achieve excellent antibacterial and antioxidant properties.Initiallycotton fabrics are cationized using 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (CHPTAC). Subsequently, the cationized fabrics are treated with MRPs through an impregnation method. The results indicate that CHPTAC treatment introduces cationic groups to the cotton fabric, significantly enhancing the adsorption ofMRPs. The optimal conditions for MRPs treatment are 90∘C , 120min , pH 7, and a polyglutamic acid/glucose concentration of 60g/L .Under these conditions, the treated cotton fabrics exhibit a dark brown color with a K/S value of up to 6.5.They achieve grade 5 in rub fastness and color change fastness, although light fastness still requires improvement. The treated fabrics demonstrate excellent bioactivity, with antibacterial and antioxidant activities exceeding 95% .However, the durability of the bioactivity is relatively weak and needs further enhancement. Additionally, the treated coton fabrics show improved UV shieldingproperties, reducingUVA and UVB transmittance to below 3%
