A Study of the Personnel Structure of the Siku Quanshu Compilation Bureau from a Digital Humanities Perspective
Abstract The paper verifies biographical information on the majorityof offcials in the Siku Quanshu Compilation Bureau,includingtheirnativeplacesandtheyears inwhichtheyatained their highestdegreeintheimperialexamination system,andexaminesthedistributionalcharacteristicsoftheirinstitutionalafiliations,nativeplaces,degrees,andthe timing of their highest examination achievements.The findings reveal thatthe Siku Quanshu Compilation Bureau was established inaccordancewith existing institutionalnorms,withthe HanlinAcademyas itscore,andrelied heavilyon officials drawn from multiplecentral agencies.Selection was primarily conducted through institutions rather than individuals.The Grand Council was deeply involved in thecompilation of the Siku Quanshu.The personnel structureof the Bureau was markedbydiversity,intersectionality,andcomplexity.Thedistributionofofficials’native places closely overlapped with thatof Qing dynasty jinshi degree-holders andoficials presented atcourt during the Qianlong reign. While the majorityofoficials werejinshi,some jurenandotherofficialsonthezhongzheng List were also included.The largest umbersofoficials wererecruitedfrom thecohortsofthe metropolitan examinations heldinthe 34th,37th,and 40thyearsof the Qianlong reign.Extensiverelational networks existedamong theofficials,encompassing tiesof colleagueship,native-place associations,shared examinationcohorts,andexaminer-candidaterelationshipinthe imperial examination.
