Abstract: Using the corpus collected from Huangdi Neijing, this study systematically analyzes the multidimensional connotations of the culture-loaded term “Bai” in TCM and compares the English translation strategies employed by Wu Liansheng & Wu Qi, Li Zhaoguo, and Paul U. Unschuld. It is found that the Chinese character “Bai” has complex meanings in the context of traditional Chinese medicine, such as color attributes, Feiqi, acupoint names, astrological references, and its usage as a phonetic loan character. A rigid translation of “Bai” as “white” may lead to loss of cultural information or semantic deviation. Instead, translators should adopt flexible strategies—literal translation, free translation, and annotations—in specific contexts to balance semantic accuracy and cultural exchange. Through cross-version comparisons, this study reveals the impact of translation strategies on transmission of TCM culture, provides methodological references for TCM translation, and facilitates the global dissemination of Chinese classic medical texts.
