Abstract: Objective This study aims to investigate the controlling mechanism of aquifer heterogeneity on solute transport in the riparian Zone upstream of a dam under operational conditions.Methods Based on a series of borehole measurement data from the Xinglong Dam area on the Han River, T-PROGS (Transition Probability Geostatistical Software) was used to characterize the sedimentary characteristics of the area. Subsequently, Subsequently,a random two-dimensional heterogeneous aquifer model of the riparian zone was constructed by using the obtained sedimentary architecture.The transport processof solutes in the riparian aquifer was simulated by means of MODFLOW and MT3D modules, and the impact of sedimentary lengths and thicknesses on heterogeneous solute transport was investigated. Results Itis indicated that the proportions of clay,silt,fine sand, and silty clayinthestudyarea areO.33,0.27,0.09,and0.31,respectively,with sedimentarythicknesesof3.68, 2.34,2.10,and 3.40 meters,respectively.The sedimentary lengths are ten times the thicknesses.Conclusion An increase in sedimentary length leads toan increase in solute transport velocity and distance,resulting in an extended solute plume front. Conversely,an increase in sedimentary thickness reduces the solute transport velocity and distance,causing a contraction of the plume front. Overall,the riparian Zone upstream of the dam exhibitssignificant heterogeneity.The distinct sedimentary architecturescreate combinations of preferential pathways and low-permeability zones, leading to varying degrees of super-difusive solute transport phenomena.
