Abstract: Objective To investigate the adsorption behavior of Bacillus subtilis on montmorillonite and kaolin, comparing the adsorption characteristics of these two clay minerals.Methods Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the adsorption capacity of montmorilonite and kaolin for Bacillus subtilisunder different bacterial concentrations, temperatures, adsorption times, and pH conditions. The adsorption behavior was characterized by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR),and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results Bacilus subtilis was rapidly adsorbed by both clay minerals, with montmorilonite exhibiting a higher adsorption capacity than kaolin. The adsorption capacity for Bacillus subtilison both clay minerals decreased with increasing pH and temperature.Notably, the adsorption on montmorilonite was more significantly affected by temperature. Conclusion The differences in the adsorption mechanisms between the two types of clay minerals at the crystal structure level are revealed.The adsorptionon kaolin primarily relies on the coordination of surface Al-OH groups, whereas that on montmorillonite is dominated by ion exchange and physical adsorption, providing more active sites to its interlayer cations and larger specific surface area.
