In1979,he received the California Instituteof Technology's highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award.In 1991,hewasconferredthehonorarytitleof "National Outstanding Scientist" by the State Council andthe CentralMilitary Commission.In 1999,hewas awardedthe“TwoBombs,OneSatellite"Achievement Medal (for his contributions to China's nuclear and missile programs,and its first satellite) by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the State Council, and the Central Military Commission.On March 28,2009,he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the “Chinese Impacting the World"Awards (2oo8). Yet in his heart, the nation came first,his family second; science mattered most, fame and fortune least. He was Qian Xuesen—the outstanding aerospace scientistand father of China's missile program.

In August 1935,Qian Xuesen went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MlT) in the US as a government-sponsored student, studying aeronautical engineering and aerodynamics.After earninghismaster'sdegree,heenteredthe California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to pursue his doctorate, studying under the“Father of Supersonic Flight", Theodore von Karman. A few years later, his groundbreaking rocket theory一claiming that“a rocket traveling at 10,ooo kilometers per hour is possible"-brought him worldwide fame,establishing himasa renownedaerodynamicsexpert.During World War Il, Qian Xuesen,alongside his mentor von Karman,wasinvolved in critical rocketryresearch that supported the top-secret American “Manhattan Project"-his work focused on early missile development for the potential delivery of nuclear weapons.HebecameaprofessoratMlTin1947anda professorat Caltechin1949.
