本文选自《中国人的教养》中的“修身与伦理十六讲”

Diligence is a good habit. What people seek after are different, but the key lies in each person striving to the best of their ability to fulfill their duties according to their own status and circumstances-this is also indispensable for those who focus on cultivating moral character. By making efforts insistently in one's occupation, one will learn appropriate methods and the meaning of self-restraint, and virtues such as shrewdness, carefulness, and perseverance will be developed one after another. No behavior corrupts one's character more than laziness and sloth.Laziness is the root of all evils. The ancients said that those with inferior character can do all kinds of bad things when left idle and alone, and this is precisely the reason. Not only those with bad character, but even good people—if they eat their fill every day and do nothing-will inevitably drift from comfort and ease to idleness and laziness. Thus, vulgar and indecent thoughts, as well as absurd and improper ideas, germinate unconsciously, gradually grow and spread, and become difficult to control. This is what we should be alert to.
