Upgrading Renovation and Commissioning Practice of the Bardenpho Process in a Comprehensive Wastewater Treatment Plant

Abstract:Since March28,2023,theefluentof newlyconstructed municipal wastewater treatment plants in Jiangsu provincehas beenrequired tocomply with thePolltantDischarge Standardsfor Urban Sewage Treatment Plants (DB32/444O—2022),whileexisting plantsare mandated tomeettheClassBdischarge limitsafterathree-year transition period.Basedontheupgrading renovationprojectofacomprehensive wastewater treatmentplant inNantong,this study elaborates onthe reconstruction strategyof treatment structures,designparameters,andoperational commissioning process ofthe five-stage Bardenpho processKeycontrol measures—including sludge seeding andacclimation,stepwise increase of treatmentcapacity,regulationof disolvedoxygenand internal/externalrefluxratios,andoptimizationof external carbonsourcedosingweresystematicallanalyzed in termsof their impacts on efluent quality.The results indicatethat,through phasedcommissioningand refined parameter control,astablemicrobial communitystructure was succesfullystablished,andtheefuentchemicaloxygendemand,totalnitrogen,andtotalphosphorusosisetly met the Class Bdischarge limits specified in DB32/440—2022.The engineering practice demonstrates that the Bardenpho process exhibits efective nitrogenand phosphorus removal performance in comprehensive wastewater treatment plants with complex influent characteristics,and can provide technical reference for similar upgrading renovation projects.
