Investigation and analysis of English learning of vocational college students

Abstract:English is an important course in higher vocational institute students’ daily learning,in this paper,using the method of investigation,a professional technology institute in gansu province city of P part of English teachers and students in sampling investigation,and analyzing the current situation of English learning,specific content mainly involves the students’ English learning methods,difficulties,and on the basis of in-depth analysis of the reasons put forward corresponding countermeasures and Suggestions.

With the rapid development of globalization,contemporary society attaches more and more importance to English learning.How to improve English skills and the effectiveness of English learning and teaching is an eternal topic.There are many factors influencing the improvement of English ability of students in higher vocational colleges.

1 Survey introduction

In order to highlight the practicality and pertinence of this paper,the author took the English teachers and students of X vocational school in P city,gansu province as an example to conduct a questionnaire survey,and conducted necessary interviews for specific questions,involving 30 front-line English teachers and 150 students.This research focuses on the difficulties faced by vocational school students in English learning,and interviews with relevant teachers are targeted at Suggestions on English teaching reform.This research has a comprehensive understanding of the current situation of English learning of vocational school students,which is of certain practical significance.

2 Analysis of survey results

2.1 Students’ English learning

The results of this survey on the current situation of students’ English learning are as follows: first of all,in terms of interest in English learning,22% of the surveyed students are very interested in English learning,26% are moderately interested in English learning,and 52% are not interested in English learning.Secondly,in terms of learning English time,9% of the surveyed students said that they often use their spare time to learn English,20% of the surveyed students said that they “occasionally” use their spare time to learn English,71% of the surveyed students answered that they do not use their spare time to learn English.Thirdly,the restricted factors, 21% of the students surveyed said their English foundation is too weak,29% of the students surveyed said they didn’t interest of English learning,31% of students think they don’t have the method of learning English,19% of students think they don’t learn English well,because the primary school English learning atmosphere is not strong.Finally,when answering the question of how students want teachers to improve their English teaching,64% of the students said they hope teachers can adopt more diversified methods to stimulate their enthusiasm for English learning,and 36% of the students said they hope schools can hold more English learning activities to improve the learning atmosphere.

2.2 Teacher factors

English teachers are the main body of English teaching,and their teaching practice is directly related to the effect of teaching.This research aimed at investigating the situation of teachers’ English teaching results are as follows: first,in terms of English teaching methods,46% of the teachers interviewed said normally adopts demonstration voice,and then guides the student to read with the method of teaching students to learn English words and articles,said 33% of teachers mainly adopts the method of the combination of teaching practice to learn English.21% percent of the teachers surveyed usually organized their teaching practice by “group cooperation or independent inquiry”.Second,in the teachers’ understanding of English learning difficulties of higher vocational students,53% of the teachers surveyed said they were “of higher vocational students English foundation is weak limits their further learning”,33% of the teachers surveyed said they were “English learning enthusiasm is not high is the main reason of higher vocational students”,the 14% of teachers think that students in daily English learning methods are not scientific is the main reason.Finally,in terms of factors affecting the effective implementation of teachers’ own English teaching,60% of the surveyed teachers think that our school’s English teaching method is relatively simple,23% of the surveyed teachers think that the school’s English teaching facilities are not perfect,and 17% of the surveyed teachers say that our school’s English learning atmosphere is not strong enough.

3 Analysis of problems and causes

As can be seen from the survey results,the higher vocational students of P city X school in gansu province have the following problems in English learning.Firstly,they are not interested in learning English.The reason is that they think they will not often use English in daily life.Secondly,students in higher vocational colleges have poor learning foundation and some difficulties in learning.Although they can realize the importance of English in today’s society,they cannot use English in daily life,so they have no passion for learning.There are still some students think,whether it is the students themselves or the school,the learning of English just stay in writing,do not pay attention to the application of spoken English,and students do not really master English learning methods.From the perspective of teachers,firstly,most of them admit that their teaching level is limited,and they cannot teach in English class in the whole process.As a result,students cannot effectively exercise their listening and speaking skills.Secondly,the economy of gansu province is underdeveloped and the teaching infrastructure of higher vocational colleges is backward,which also affects the ability of students to accept and absorb new knowledge.

In my opinion,the reason why vocational college students in P city X school in gansu province have low enthusiasm for English learning has something to do with the backward local economic development.Due to the slow development of local economy,they cannot attract foreign enterprises to settle in this region,so they cannot absorb English majors for employment.The main purpose for students to choose a major for study is for better employment in the future.However,in P city,gansu province,a few jobs cannot meet the demand for employment,so most students think that learning English is useless and cannot help them find a job in the future,which is the economic reason.Concept of the second reason is that,due to the backward economy,in both parents and students,has a certain deviation in learning ideas,still can not pay attention to the importance of English,as well as local students are reluctant to go away for employment,but the local employment opportunities and very few,so the idea is difficult to change,resulting in a vicious cycle of all aspects.

4 Recommendations and measures

In view of the problems summarized in this survey,the following improvement Suggestions and implementation measures are put forward: first of all,we should strengthen the training of English teachers’ teaching skills in our school.In the daily teaching,it is suggested that through the organization of college oral English teaching seminars,lectures,teaching skills upgrading for the oral English teaching skills contest and other activities,to improve a line of English teachers’ English teaching skills and oral English ability,encourage them to special research and application of new teaching methods,teaching to improve their English skills through practical experience.

Secondly,the interest-based teaching method is used to stimulate students’ enthusiasm for English learning.It is suggested that teachers should adopt more interest-based teaching methods in teaching,such as English game teaching method and English deductive teaching method,so as to stimulate students’ interest in English learning.In addition,the teaching method of “more encouragement,less criticism” should be adopted to make more students happy to participate in English learning.

The main point is that the region’s economic development to deployment and planning,resource to develop local economy,attracting a large number of foreign companies to invest or labor-intensive enterprises to local,so as to provide more jobs to absorb employment,it will fundamentally inspire higher vocational college students’ learning enthusiasm and enthusiasm for English.
